The Day it Snowed Tortillas, 2026
acrylic, canvas
6 x 10.5 ft
This mural portrays a scene from the New Mexican folk tale, “The Day it Snowed Tortillas” made popular by local storyteller Joe Hayes of Santa Fe, NM. Ehren first became enchanted with the story when his substitute teacher, Mr. Trujillo, performed it for his first-grade class. The tale follows the adventures of an old, feeble-minded woodcutter who finds an abandoned treasure in the woods, and his little old wife must outwit a band of thieves into believing her husband is crazy. This image specifically portrays the scene when the little old lady throws tortillas all over their yard with the intention to fool her husband into thinking it snowed tortillas overnight. Ehren seeks to evoke the same curiosity and wonder which the title suggests.
